Tribute to a Writer, My Son
by Don Ford
Son, you’re starting to show me up
I’ve climbed this ladder, way up high
Even reached some milestones here
Now you’ve gone and touched the sky
Remember me, when I’m old and grey
Oops, I guess that I’m already there
But I hang with kids to still feel young
Only thing missing - most of my hair
I’m happy to say, I’ve had a good run
Published pieces coming out my ear
I’ve compiled many short story books
For much more success in future years
Keep sending those cards and letters out
My son, you’re what we call a steady roll
You’ve dug in your nails and hung right in
Climbed out of some very deep holes
I’m proud your always reaching higher
I’m proud that I can call you my son
You may not need my advice anymore
So I’ll hang around, just for the fun
In the end, when we cash in our chips
Standing in line to receive our dues
I know we could have done much better
But I’ll be the last to sing the blues

I guess all that storytelling I did when Drew was young, paid off, but writing is that way also, no one usually makes it over night, but after a long bout of hard work.
